Is the clock winding down on daylight saving time? Here’s when the time changes
The rites of Autumn: Leaves are changing color, business is brisk at the area’s apple orchards, football is back and the debate over the usefulness of daylight saving time has resumed.
When is it time to fall back?
Daylight saving time ends in most areas of the US at 2 am on Sunday, Nov. 6. The return to central standard time means you should set your clocks back an hour before going to bed on Saturday the 5th or early Sunday the 6th. It’s also a good time to check the batteries in your home’s smoke detectors.
Daylight saving or savings time?
The correct phrasing is “daylight saving time.”
Which states don’t observe daylight saving time?
Currently, Arizona and Hawaii are the only states in the US that don’t observe daylight saving time and remain on standard time year-round. Indiana did not observe daylight saving time until 2006.

Why was daylight saving time enabled in the first place?
Daylight saving time began in 1918 primarily to reduce energy consumption and promote commerce. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the current system of twice-a-year clock changes between standard time and daylight saving time.
The US experimented with permanent daylight saving time in January 1974 during an international oil crisis. Permanent daylight saving time ended in October of that year.
What has become of more recent efforts to make daylight saving time permanent?
In March, the US Senate approved the Sunshine Protection Act, which would abolish clock changes in favor of permanent daylight saving time. The US House of Representatives has not taken action on the legislation. While dozens of states have contemplated legislation to end clock changes, only federal action can establish permanent daylight saving time in the US
Is there opposition to permanent daylight saving time?
Organizations including the National Sleep Foundation and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine prefer the idea of permanent standard time rather than permanent daylight saving time. They argue daylight saving time reduces exposure to morning sunlight and makes it more difficult to wake up in the morning while more light in the evening may make it more difficult to doze off at night.
