WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — Another Small Business Saturday has come and gone, with dozens of people taking downtown Wausau to shop small.
Allison Magnuson opened The Local in downtown Wausau in 2017, this year is her sixth small business Saturday.
“It’s exciting to see so many people out and about today.” said Magnuson.
Business owners say the dedicated day makes them feel appreciated.

Leading up to holiday season in past years, Andover native Mike Lamagna ran up and down Newbury Street in Boston, begging everyone he knew who owned a storefront on the busy city avenue to allow him to host a small pop-up event for his business, Long Wharf Supply Co.
Not this year, however.
Lamagna will live out his dream Saturday when he officially opens his company’s first brick-and-mortar space at 119 Newbury St. It also falls on Small Business Saturday, which business owners and officials say is essential for the long-term survival of local shops.
“It’s the one day of…

A small business group is suing to block a law that was designed to stop money-laundering by rooting out the use of anonymous shell companies.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by the National Small Business Association in the US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, and argues the shell-company bill is unconstitutional because it infringes on protected rights of state sovereignty, privacy and due process.
The Corporate Transparency Act, the law’s formal name, was passed as part of annual defense spending legislation and signed into law last year. It requires companies with 20 or fewer full-time employees and…
Small business sales in Massachusetts, in the vast majority of circumstances, would not trigger the so-called Fair Share Amendment or millionaires tax, should the contentious ballot question succeed at the polls next month, a new report released Monday finds.
Opponents of Ballot Question 1, which would impose a 4% surtax on incomes exceeding $1 million, warn that one-time earnings — including from the sale of businesses — could disproportionately harm small business owners and their nest eggs as they wrestle with the impact of the referendum. Funding from the tax is intended to augment transportation and education spending.

An index of small business optimism edged up slightly by 0.3 points in September to a reading of 92.1 as sales expectations rose, according to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
However, the index still remains below its 48-year average of 98, as rising costs weigh on businesses, with close to a third of owners saying that inflation was their single most important problem. About half, or 51% of owners said they are raising average selling prices.
As many businesses struggle to clear excess inventories, a net 0% of owners said they planned to invest in inventories in the…

Ottawa may be unable to recoup $5-billion or more of the $49-billion in emergency loans it extended to small businesses during the pandemic lockdowns, according to a government projection.
The task of chasing down business owners to collect on the mountain of debt issued during the most acute phase of the pandemic, when many struggled to survive widespread shutdowns, was recently handed by the federal government to the Canada Revenue Agency.
Ottawa announced the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) loan program on April 9, 2020,…
