Overweight US Adolescents Eat More Ultra-Processed Foods

September 21, 2022 · 7:00 PM “One little piece won’t hurt . . .” An article in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found an association between overweight/obesity and consumption of ultra-processed foods in US adolescents. The study looked at 3,600 adolescents who reported their food intake over a 24-hour period. The results are pretty strong: the more ultra-processed food consumed, the greater the odds of overweight and obesity. US consumers swap credit cards for other financing options: JD Power

Although US credit card users are happy with this credit option, they’re using it less frequently in favor of other alternatives, a JD Power study said. (iStock) Although Americans are happy with their credit card services, financial stress and the increased use of alternative financing options means they are relying on them less, a recent study said. The JD Power 2022 US Credit Card Satisfaction study said that overall satisfaction with credit cards improved by 5 points to 810 (on a 1,000-point scale) compared to last year. This was measured by the so-called Net Promoter Score. However, the study said…

One More Cure for Hiccups

December 20, 2022 · 5:50 AM I’ve written previously about how Paul Ingraham helped cure my patello-femoral pain syndrome. More recently, Paul looked into hiccup cures because his father had an intractable case. What finally worked for dad? Breathing into a plastic bag. Boosting blood CO2 (hypercapnia) by breathing in a PLASTIC bag. This one is quite plausible and is easy and safe to try. Hypercapnia definitely affects some kinds of hiccups. The story (from a smart source, a good “friend of PainSci”): “There’s an even easier way out of hiccups — at zero cost. Learned it from my uncle,…

Former NYU administrator charged for orchestrating $3.5M fraud scheme

A former New York University director of finance allegedly siphoned $3.5 million meant for minority and women-owned businesses and blew some of the cash on himself — including on an $80,000 pool for her Connecticut home, prosecutors said Monday. Cindy Tappe, 57, was charged with diverting funds from the New York State Education Department grants into shell companies that she created over a six-year scheme that was discovered in 2018, when she left NYU, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Some of the embezzled money went to expenses related to the grants or employee reimbursement — but at least…

Malaysian PM Anwar to become finance minister in the new Cabinet

KUALA LUMPUR. Malaysia (AP) — New Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Friday he will also serve as finance minister as he unveiled a leaner Cabinet with many new faces in his unity government. In a move that appeared to contradict his anti-corruption platform, Anwar named the graft-tainted head of a smaller bloc as one of his two deputies. Malaysian politics took an unprecedented turn after a Nov. 19 general elections failed to produce an outright winner. Anwar’s Alliance of Hope led with 82 seats but fell short of the 112 needed for a majority, while an Islamic nationalist bloc…

Mon. Alberta Darling, long-serving Wisconsin Republican, to retire

State Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, who helped oversee budgets and pushed to bring school choice to Wisconsin, announced Wednesday that she’ll end her 32-year political career and retire Dec. 1. In a letter to Senate President Chris Kapenga, Darling said it “has been my honor and privilege to represent the great people of Wisconsin. I am especially fortunate to have been surrounded by a supporting family and staff. I thank them for their patience and dedication to the state of Wisconsin. “Serving requires many sacrifices and I look forward to giving my family and friends my full attention,” Darling…

Ivanka Trump tried to escape judge’s order to monitor Trump family finances, report says

Former White House aide Ivanka Trump attempted to wriggle her way out of a court order appointing a special monitor to oversee the major transactions of the Trump Organization and individuals with connections to the company, according to The Daily Beast. The news outlet reported on Monday that the ex-president’s eldest daughter sought through letters from her attorneys to the court to have her name removed from the order, a step that her two brothers Eric and Donald Jr. did not take as the New York attorney general’s lawsuit against the company progresses. She was unsuccessful, according to The Daily…

Kari Lake-Linked Tech Firm Superfeed Wreaking Campaign Finance Havoc in Arizona

Questions have been raised about a series of apps that are providing information on Arizona’s conservative candidates. In fact, thanks to the Trump campaign’s ex-chief operating officer and financial patron to Arizona gubernatorial aspirant Kari Lake, the Grand Canyon State has a whole slew of them. The app Superfeed Technologies developed for Lake appears to be the most popular of the four apps which the Phoenix-based firm has developed for GOP candidates in Arizona—seemingly free of charge. More than a thousand Android users and an unknown number of iPhone holders to date have downloaded the tool, which provides regular updates…
