City funding of $2.55 million proposed to help three affordable apartment developments

A proposed affordable apartment building with a new King Library branch is one of three such developments that could get city funding. City funds totaling $2.55 million are being proposed to help finance three Milwaukee affordable apartment developments, including one that would house a new library branch. The three developments are among several such Wisconsin projects that have been delayed as inflated construction costs have affected their financing packages. The new proposals, from Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s administration, would create tax incremental financing districts for each development. The property tax revenue generated by each development would provide the city funds to…

To a Mouse – RoSPA Workplace Safety Blog

This year the birth of Robert Burns and the Lunar New Year fell on the same date, 25th January. A time for Scots and Asian heritage to be celebrated, a time for reflection and forward planning. My favorite Robert Burns poem is ‘To a Mouse’, written in 1785 it tells the story of Burns disturbing a mouse nest whilst ploughing a field, a panic stricken mouse, its ruined nest and with winter just around the corner, its world in disarray . There is a line in the poem, ‘The best laid plans o’mice an’ men gang aft agley’ that resonates…

Financial markets are in chaos. What’s next for the real economy?

The federal reserve began raising interest rates to battle inflation in America a full six months ago. But its determination to crush surging prices, whatever the cost to the economy, is only now starting to sink in. The central bank’s latest policy meeting, which ended on September 21st, has been followed by dramatic moves in financial markets across the world. The economic consequences will be a little slower in coming, but no weaker for it. Listen to this story.Enjoy more audio and podcasts on iOS or Android. Your browser does not support the element. What the inverted yield curve means for your portfolio

Morsa Images | E+ | Getty Images As investors digest another 0.75 percentage point interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, government bonds may be signaling distress in the markets. Ahead of news from the Fed, the policy-sensitive 2-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.006% on Wednesday, the highest level since October 2007, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury reached 3.561% after hitting an 11-year high this week. When shorter-term government bonds have higher yields than long-term bonds, which is known as yield curve inversions, it’s viewed as a warning sign for a future recession. And the closely-watched spread between the 2-year…

Fed again hikes interest rates by 75 basis points in aggressive bid to fight inflation

The US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.75% for the third consecutive time as the central bank continues to try to tame multi-decade highs in inflation. Three 75-basis-point rate hikes in a row is unprecedented since the Fed explicitly started targeting the federal funds rate to conduct monetary policy in the late 1980s. The rate hike brings the central bank’s benchmark interest rate, the federal funds rate, to a new range of 3.0% to 3.25% — its highest level since 2008 — from a current range between 2.25% and 2.5%. Stocks turned negative following the announcement before bouncing back…
