Risk management leader wins Canada’s top industry award

April Savchuk has received the Donald M. Stuart Award, Canada’s top honor in risk management, presented by the RIMS Ontario Chapter at the RIMS Canada Conference 2026 in Quebec City.
As director of global insurance and risk at Centerra Gold Inc., Savchuk leads the company’s insurance programs, enterprise risk management, crisis coordination, and reclamation efforts. Throughout her career, she has helped organizations address complex risks, develop alternative risk financing approaches, and enhance supply chain resilience.
From 2000 to 2013, she held leadership positions within ORIMS, including terms as president in 2005 and 2011. She later co-chaired the RIMS Canada Conference’s National Committee from 2011 to 2017 and served on the RIMS Canada Council’s Nominating Committee from 2014 to 2017.
In her acceptance speech, Savchuk praised mentorship and the industry’s collaborative spirit.
Debbie Carpenter, president of ORIMS, praised Savchuk’s strategic approach and leadership.
Risk management professionals must adapt to shifting regulations and new technologies. Her award highlights the need for both specialized skills and active community involvement to advance the field.
Her recognition comes after decades of direct experience in crisis response, insurance design, and cross-border risk management. At Centerra Gold, she oversees risks across mining operations, logistics, and regulatory compliance on a global scale.
Carpenter’s remarks emphasized Savchuk’s role in supporting professional growth. “This award celebrates not just her achievements, but her investment in the people who will carry risk management forward.”
