the Peabody Gazette-Herald bobbed high above the boy’s head as he shouted, “The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor! The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor!” Five-year-old Ron Slaymaker watched the paper boy, uncertain about all the commotion on December 7, 1941. “I remember that day,” recalled Slaymaker. “For the next four years, we were involved in World War II. Everything changed. We had to sacrifice. All the news was about the war.” Slaymaker enjoys telling stories and at 86 years old he has a lot to share. His tales entertain and often he adds flavor, and exaggerations to key details for a greater…

Education continues to evolve offering students an assortment of opportunities to earn college credit while still attending high school. In the state of Idaho, the Fast Forward Program provides students attending public schools access to $4,125.00 to help pay for dual/concurrent enrollment credits, Advanced Placement College Board, and Professional Technical Education exams and overload course fees. Dual/concurrent enrollment is a collaborative partnership between higher education and high schools to provide college courses for high school students. The high school instructors are pre-approved by the college/university academic departments to deliver college-level courses. A fundamental component of this partnership is that the…

Jacksonville small business owners hope you shop locally

There are just two weeks left before Christmas, and small businesses hope shoppers consider buying locally. The Pop Up in the Park: Holiday Market at James Weldon Johnson Park was a day full of local vendors. “If you come down and you buy from the people who live here, the people, the artists, the partisans who build things locally, you’re supporting the local community,” said Chris Gresham, co-Owner of 215DesignsJax. “And it’s not going to be something that’s in the store. It’s very unique, personal, and special,” said Dianne Woods, owner of Jim and Bunny Handcrafted Soap. With Christmas coming…

Small Business Group Challenges Law Requiring Corporate-Ownership Disclosure

A small business group is suing to block a law that was designed to stop money-laundering by rooting out the use of anonymous shell companies. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by the National Small Business Association in the US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, and argues the shell-company bill is unconstitutional because it infringes on protected rights of state sovereignty, privacy and due process. The Corporate Transparency Act, the law’s formal name, was passed as part of annual defense spending legislation and signed into law last year. It requires companies with 20 or fewer full-time employees and…

The Effects of the Pandemic on Physical Education School-Aged Children – PHE America

The global pandemic has wreaked havoc on academics, classrooms, and physical education. There is no doubt physical education and the physical development of children during their developmental years were greatly affected by the pandemic. Physical education is a field in which physical distancing, wearing masks, and avoiding close contact is extremely difficult. The importance of physical education for a child’s social, emotional, and physical well-being has been shown for decades (Bailey, 2006). As the country slowly comes out of the pandemic restrictions, interest in how physical education classes were affected during a pandemic should be studied. During the early 2022…

I love finding creative ways to incorporate STEAM into Physical Education. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. I was at my daughter’s Open House for her enrichment class in Bayport where she was showing me how her class was using Ozobots to practice coding. I was immediately intrigued by these little coding robots. I immediately noticed how the students’ faces lit up with excitement as they explained to their parents all the functions you could perform with them. Immediately I thought, “what if we combine fitness activities with coding”? What a great way to relate to the…

Small Business Optimism Rose in September Despite Inflation Worries

An index of small business optimism edged up slightly by 0.3 points in September to a reading of 92.1 as sales expectations rose, according to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). However, the index still remains below its 48-year average of 98, as rising costs weigh on businesses, with close to a third of owners saying that inflation was their single most important problem. About half, or 51% of owners said they are raising average selling prices. As many businesses struggle to clear excess inventories, a net 0% of owners said they planned to invest in inventories in the…
